About me
Leyli Salayeva, born in Baku—a city with an ancient heart—is a poet, writer, essayist, lecturer, literary translator, experimental artist and producer with a diverse creative presence across visual art, literature, and performance. Her works have appeared in newspapers and journals across Azerbaijan, the UK, the USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Poland, and beyond. She is the founder of Updown Poetry & 57 Poetry Lab, platform dedicated to poetic education. Among her clients are Andbeyond private club, Yves Delorme, Rolls-Royce, Cafer Erol, Yarat Academy, TISA school, etc.
An award-winning author, Leyli has published a children’s book, two English-language poetry collections, and three Russian-language collections. Her poetry explores the complexity of the female soul, while her latest project, 57 Portraits, presents a unique gallery of contemporary personalities. Youtopia earned an honorable mention at the London Book Festival in 2016, and Dilber and Her Spoonful Journey won second place at the XIII International CIS Art of the Book competition.
A dedicated advocate for female role models, Leyli has contributed to initiatives such as Cəsur Qızlar and Cəsur Addımlar, a book by the GenderTalks Platform supported by the British Embassy that showcases ten Azerbaijani women whose bold actions have paved the way for future generations. She also served as one of four role models in UNICEF and AFFA’s #GirlsCan campaign, using her journey to inspire girls to break stereotypes and follow their passions. In addition, Leyli has participated in various book and art initiatives that empower women through storytelling and creative expression.
Leyli is also deeply engaged in ecological activism. She participated in a COP29 panel discussion, highlighting the role of artists in addressing climate issues and promoting sustainability through their work. In 2025, she completed the Climate Adaptation for Creatives course at Black Mountains College (Wales, UK), supported by the British Council, a programme designed to equip creative practitioners with tools to respond to climate change through artistic practice, project development, and international collaboration.
Through 57 Poetry Lab, she offers lectures that provide fresh perspectives on poets and their work. Her essays draw connections between different poets, uncovering historical influences and placing a special focus on female voices in literature.
In addition to her writing and educational work, she has served on jury panels for cultural and literary events, including the DokuBaku International Documentary Film Festival and Poetry Battle.
She actively collaborates with artists and creatives worldwide, with her works featured at prestigious venues such as the Poetry Society in London, Triumph Gallery in Moscow, YAY Gallery in Baku, the Tbilisi Art Fair (TAF), and the international festival Maiden Tower.
